Painting at Duffield

Remember the questions in this Christmas carol?
Said the night wind to the little lamb,
Do you see what I see
Way up in the sky little lamb,
Do you see what I see?

Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy,
Do you hear what I hear
Ringing through the sky shepherd boy,
Do you hear what I hear?
Even a painter can run into the questions of this carol, as I discovered.

It was a beautiful Spring day, great for painting. I headed for Camp Duffield. When you look for a scene to paint, there has to be a spark, a reason for wanting to paint it in the first place. After looking around I saw possibilities in this location and got to work.

I particularly enjoyed designing this scene with the sum casting shadows on this road going up the hill and bending out of sight. I had to work quickly, remembering that the sun will keep moving. I was really having fun. That's a good sign. Then after about two hours I stopped. In painting you have to know when to stop.

It was time to step back and see how I was doing. Some parts you like and some could have been better. And then after you are packed up you may size up the painting again. It is then that the painting may say something to you that was far from your mind as you painted. That was the case with this water-color sketch. And that is what I want to share with you.

I saw the road curving up the hill and turning out of sight. And I heard the refrain of this carol, "Do you see what I see?" I looked again and I saw a message about my life. Your life and that of everyone is like that dirt road. No one can see what lies ahead around the bend. And the painting said, "But Jesus can. He came to guide your life now."

And then I looked again at the dirt road. I had been pleased with the effect of the shadows. But now as I took in the road, I heard the next refrain of the carol, "Do you heard what I hear?" I did more than examine how well or not I had put in the shadows. I heard Christ's irresistible invitation first heard by the brothers, Peter and Andrew. I was hearing the Great Invitation, "Come and walk with me and let me bring something new into your life."

There is of course a third refrain, "Do you know what I know?" And I was pleased to realize I have the assurance that I know the Gift of Christ! I was also thinking what a wonderful place to have such an encounter with Jesus. Many, many boys and girls who shared in our Church Camp at Duffield over the years, if asked, "Do you know what I know?" would emphatically answer, "Yes, I saw what you saw. I heard what you heard. I know what you know, and I heard it in our Church Camp at Camp Duffield."

Duffield Yearly Report

Friends and Members of Duffield,

The trees are gray and the cool darkness of winter is upon us. Duffield has been put away and secured for the long, cold season that we northerners both dread and cherish.

Duffield knows no more peaceful days than when the glistening snow lies silent and crusted over the sleeping ground. We all know there are seeds, buds, and roots storing up their energy to burst forth when the warmth of spring penetrates our world again. In the meantime, we protect what needs to be kept from freezing by burning what God has given us to burn and we celebrate Advent, Christmas, birthdays, Valentines Day, New Years, and Lent. All those will pass before the summer blossoms and Duffield welcomes summer campers once again.

In the meantime there are an increasing number of groups planning to use Keeler Lodge for planning meetings, worship, and just retreating for a time. As of this writing, there are six weekends available out of the first 20 weeks of 2012! I’m hearing an increased need for a winterized dining hall that will serve more groups and larger ones.

2011 has been quite a year! God is truly good and we can celebrate that goodness and faithfulness; and celebrate we will at Duffield Camp And Retreat Center’s Annual Meeting on January 23rd, 2012.

As you are aware, membership organizations in New York State are required to hold an annual meeting to elect board of directors and to conduct such other business as is suitable.

As you can tell, we are campers and not corporate executives so we will be doing things simply and unpretentiously.

Date: January 23, 2012
Time: Dinner @ 6:00 PM Meeting @ 7:00 PM
Place: Orchard Park Presbyterian Church
Event: Duffield, Inc. Dinner & Annual Meeting
Who: All delegates and interested people
Why: Required and fun
RSVP: Glenn Tanner, Treasurer ( 716-683-0523 ) or above address
OR: Mary Owens, President ( 716-228-2291 )

The board members that will be up for election will be:
( 3 Year term ) Nancy Rolando – Bob Casseri – Vanessa Patrone – Kelly Harty

There are several empty chairs on the board and we will accept nominations. Please verify that the individual is willing to serve for 3 full years before submitting nomination.

2012 promises to be several magnitudes better than 2011. The board of directors have been engaged and meeting regularly to assure a top quality camping experience for all who find their way to Duffield. From the look of things, there will be huge quality and quantity improvements. Please pray for Jesus Christ to always be at the heart of everything we do for Duffield and to be the core benefit for those whom we serve.

As we hunker down to get through the winter, our expenses diminish but they don’t sleep. Please consider a gift to Duffield to express your thankfulness for what God has done thus far @ Duffield, and a little extra to get us launched in good order for the busy 2012 that is fast approaching. After all, you are Duffield and it’s your ministry space.

Hope to see you there.
In Him,
- Glenn Tanner
Treasurer, Duffield, Inc.

New Nurse's Cabin Porch

Recently a new porch was built out on the side of the Nurse's Cabin at Camp Duffield. The small porch by the back door needed replacing, so a large wrap around porch was built to give the area much more room. We would like to thank those who helped build the new porch.

A review of the Woman's Fall Retreat

At the Woman's Fall Retreat at Camp Duffield on October 30-November 1, 2009 “A wonderful Time was had by All”.

Camp Duffield’s 1st annual Fall Woman’s retreat was a huge success! Women attended from as far away as Pennsylvania and Florida. The food was five star and the fall decorations set Keeler Lodge into a wonderful space of cozy, warm, and welcoming.

Our keynote speaker Susan Puff shared from her experiences and Scripture to set us all on a path of reflection and action. We took our notes home with renewed faith.

Saturday evening we enjoyed and participated with musician Sue Rozler, Mama Earth’s Kitchen Band. She had us all singing and using pot lids with wooden spoons, washboards and sticks and also numerous ethnic African wooden percussion instruments. We sang out loud like we were a bunch of ‘kids at camp’ and we were! Later in the evening Sue thrilled us with songs of her own writing and a bit of the God story in her life.

The deep fellowship shared as sisters in Christ was enhanced by our times of worship. No one could have convinced us it was a cold, wet windy Halloween outside, because inside Keeler Lodge our hearts and our spirits were warm and toasty.

Best of all, we all participated in a glimpse of the vision that Duffield IS.

Youth and adults meeting God in the greatest possible way…together at camp!

See you next year.

- Nancy Rolando, co-chair
